Sometimes you win one battle in Hollywood only to lose another. Earlier this week we reported that the MGM reboot of Paul Verhoeven's Robocop was officially dead [1], but alas, another unnecessary remake of a Paul Verhoeven film has moved in to take its place. Sony has been developing a new take on the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi flick Total Recall for a while now, but things went fairly silent ever since Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Salt) was hired to write the screenplay [2] last year. Now the project has suddenly sprung back to life with the announcement that Len Wiseman is in final negotiations to direct. Wiseman had been previously attached to direct a remake of John Carpenter's Escape From New York and also a movie based on the Gears of War video game series, but he hasn't actually been behind the camera since Live Free or Die Hard in 2007. While he's a competent action director, I really can't see him bringing anything new to the table here. I smell another paint-by-numbers remake -- one that won't have the benefit of someone like Arnold in the lead role. The great thing about Paul Verhoeven's films is that they still hold up today. I really don't think Total Recall needs to be updated or modernized in any way, and yet they are promising a "contemporary feel...while taking care with everything we love about (the) original story." Is it a coincidence that this announcement comes just a week after Christopher Nolan's Inception, a movie that has somewhat similar themes? Probably. What do you think, does Total Recall need a new sheen of paint, or is this just another totally superfluous redo? Well, we've got another direct-to-DVD trailer today, but this one actually looks a little more promising than Mirrors 2 [1]. I wasn't a huge fan of the first 30 Days of Night movie, but there is clearly an audience for a sequel to it -- especially since there are still more comics to draw inspiration from. 30 Days of Night: Dark Days is based on the follow-up graphic novel written by Steve Niles and illustrated by Ben Templesmith. After relocating to Los Angeles, Stella Oleson meets up with a group of fellow survivors who are planning to exact revenge on the vampires. As expected, Josh Hartnett and Melissa George have not returned for this sequel, and neither has director David Slade. Kiele Sanchez (Lost, A Perfect Getaway) is taking over the role of Stella, and the cast also includes Harold Perrineau and Mia Kirshner. Director Ben Ketai, who previously did the web series 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust, has stepped in for Slade, and for the most part the visual style of the original seems to be intact. What do you think, could this be a DTV movie that won't suck? 30 Days of Night: Dark Days hits DVD and Blu-ray on October 5th; check out the trailer after the jump. It's official: Guillermo del Toro has no plans to sleep over the next decade. I don't think there is another director working right now who has more potential projects on his plate, and still he's adding more. I guess he can't say no, although in this case you can't blame him as it looks like one of his long time passion projects is finally coming to a head. Last week's announcement about The Haunted Mansion [1] seems to have been met with a wave of indifference, but this should get a few more people excited. Universal may have finally given him the go ahead on his proposed adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. What's more, it will be shot in 3-D, and James Cameron is on board as a producer! The story centers on geologist William Dyer, who discovers an ancient evil during a scientific expedition to Antarctica in the 1930s. Del Toro describes it as a "tentpole horror" film, which is why it has taken so long to get made. Unlike most horror movies, it is not being done on the cheap... it will be a big budget special effects-driven movie but with an R-rating, which never goes over well with studio execs. Hopefully James Cameron's involvement will help put their minds at ease. According to Deadline New York [2], the movie is heading into pre-production within the next few weeks, and will hopefully shoot next summer, which is very good news. Will it happen before Frankenstein [3], The Haunted Mansion [1], Van Helsing [5], The Witches [6], The Champions [7], Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Drood? We can only hope. Well, this is sure to divide the geek community something fierce: Via a press release sent out by Columbia Pictures, it's been revealed that Len Wiseman (UNDERWORLD, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) is in final negotiations to direct the remake of TOTAL RECALL, which will be "contemporized". We haven't heard much on the RECALL front since last summer, when Kurt Wimmer was hired to write the screenplay. Now,... Read More...

GRACE is one film I just couldn't get on board with, and I know I'm in the minority. The Paul Solet-directed, Adam Green-produced flick about a baby that needs blood, and the mother who provides it, just left me feeling cold; depressed instead of disturbed. (It also really struggled to hold my interest in the 2nd Act.) That said, I ackowledge that Solet showed promise in terms of creating an ominous atmosphere,... Read More...
